What is a TEXTEXPANDER file?
A TEXTEXPANDER file is a settings file created by TextExpander, a utility that allows users to save snippets of text such as addresses and phone numbers, and call them by typing shortcuts. It contains all of a user's snippets and can be used to manually transfer snippets from one device to another.
TextExpander enables you to save snippets of text that you repeatedly type, whether you are at home or the office, in order to save time. The snippets could be source code, directions, names, brand message, etc. You can then assign a shortcut to the snippet, which allows you to call and place a snippet through the typing of a shortcut.
TextExpander saves the snippets in the cloud and updates across all of your synced devices. However, if you do not have sync setup or do not want to set it up, you can transfer the TEXTEXPANDER file by copying it and manually placing it on the other computer. The file's default location on a Mac is in the following location:
[Home]/Library/Application Support/TextExpander/
You can also transfer the file to an iOS device from your Mac, PC, or iOS device.
NOTE: The TEXTEXPANDER file was used by TextExpander until version 5 when it was replaced by the .TEXTEXPANDERSETTINGS file.
Settings.textexpander - The default filename of a TEXTEXPANDER file, which stores all of your snippets.

I'm looking for a open source alternative to TextExpander (or TypeIt4Me or Typinator) -- not because I'm cheap, but because I'm interested in the source code. It therefore doesn't have to be as polished as the apps mentioned above.

KissPhrase is an open-source, free, working (as of September 2013), text expander tool for OS X. I'm using it on OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion. You can check out the source code with
svn
and download an installable disc image from the project home page at https://code.google.com/p/kissphrase.![Text Expander For Mac Open Source Text Expander For Mac Open Source](/uploads/1/2/6/0/126081909/395793666.png)
It's not as feature-rich as the other tools you mention, but is definitely something check out if you're holding off on buying TextExpander, TypeIt4Me, or Typinator (as I am).
The only issues that I have noticed with it are that it doesn't substitute perfectly in Terminal or iTerm, and doesn't seem to work at all in Alfred, Spotlight, or search fields.

You may want to rebuild it for x64, in which case see this answer for how to get KissPhrase to compile in Xcode under Mountain Lion.

If you can wait until September, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard will have rudimentary text expansion/auto-completion built in. Snow Leopard is $29 (if you're upgrading from Leopard) which is the same price as TextExpander, but then, you're getting a lotmorethan text expansion with Snow Leopard.

If you are looking for an alternative or a free alternative(not open source though) try xType for Mac by adnx software. http://www.adnx.com/i/apps/xtype4mac . As much as I loved using Text Expander trial version, it is overpriced for me (would had considered under $10) - for the cost of a utility, it is more expensive than the cost of the Operating System on a mac.

I don't know of any specific ones, but if you're looking for how they're created, you should probably read about InputManagers (I think that's what's used). You may also try asking on stackoverflow, Apple's cocoa-dev mailing list, or the #macdev IRC channel on Freenode.
